Summer has been brutal here in Charlotte, so much so I haven’t ventured out as much as I probably should. It doesn’t help that I have been in the midst of one of the worst job searches of my life, with more disappointments than I care to mention. Yet, I persist in working in my studio. In the past two months I have created a tiny zine, made small interior still life collages (studies, really), and completed a “Black Madonna” commission that inspired me. There are also some amazing art events coming up that I’m thrilled to be a part of, including a virtual solo show on Artsy opening this Saturday.

Nature’s Wild: Queering Cane Collaboration with Andil Gosine to Debut in Toronto This Fall

Originally slated for the Art Museum of the Americas, Nature’s Wild with Andil Gosine was canceled just before its opening. Now reimagined and relocated, the exhibition—including my collaboration with Gosine—will open at Paul Petro Contemporary Art in Toronto from October 10 to November 8, 2025. This new chapter of the show affirms our collective commitment to challenging institutional silencing and continuing critical dialogue around queerness, environmental justice, and Caribbean identity. Here is what I am reading, watching, and listening to as I moved in and out of the studio the past couple of months:

• Listening to: Clipse, Indigo De Souza, and Maggie Rogers on repeat.

• Reading my birthday gifts to myself: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and The Lonely City by Olivia Laing.

• Enjoying the artwork of Valerie Asiimwe Amani, the world rediscovering Mavis Pusey’s gorgeous abstract paintings and sculptures, and the bravo stance of Amy Sherald.

• Penny Dreadful remains one of the best tv shows to have been cancelled too soon by a network. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
