Nature’s Wild: Queering Cane Collaboration with Andil Gosine to Debut in Toronto This Fall
This fall, I’m proud to be among the artists featured in Nature’s Wild with Andil Gosine, now set to open at Paul Petro Contemporary Art in Toronto from October 10 through November 8, 2025.
Originally slated to premiere at the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) in Washington, D.C. on February 21, the exhibition was abruptly canceled by the institution. My response at the time reflected the frustration shared by many involved:
“As a participating artist in the now canceled ‘Nature’s Wild’ exhibition at the Art Museum of the Americas, I’m deeply disappointed that the museum decided not to stand by its commitment to supporting artists it once warmly invited into its galleries to challenge the status quo.”
Curated by scholar and artist Andil Gosine, Nature’s Wild examines the complex interplay between queerness, postcolonial identity, and the environment. My contribution to the exhibition is an extension of the “Queering Cane” collage series—an ongoing body of work that interrogates visibility, intimacy, and queerness in the Caribbean landscape. For this show, I expanded the series into new forms, responding to Gosine’s archival research and personal writing through visual language.
The upcoming Toronto debut reaffirms the vital role of artist-led and independent spaces in sustaining dialogue when institutions fall short. I’m grateful that Paul Petro has made room for this necessary show, and I look forward to seeing how Nature’s Wild continues to evolve.
